Drupada's Origins and Insult
Drupada, the powerful ruler of the Panchala kingdom, is a childhood friend of Drona, a skilled warrior and Brahmin teacher. However, their friendship sours over time. Drona, in poverty, seeks Drupada's aid, but the king, now proud and arrogant, insults his former friend. This humiliation burns within Drona, fueling his desire for revenge and shaping his destiny.
The Birth of Draupadi and Dhrishtadyumna
Seeking a way to avenge himself, Drona performs a great yajna (fire sacrifice). From the flames emerge two children: Draupadi, a woman of unparalleled beauty, and Dhrishtadyumna, a warrior destined to slay Drona. Drupada adopts both, seeing them as his instruments of vengeance.
The Swayamvara and the Pandawas
Drupada arranges a swayamvara (marriage contest) for Draupadi, setting a near-impossible archery challenge. It is Arjuna, one of the Pandawa brothers, disguised as a Brahmin, who wins the contest.
